Here’s One way that We Can Do Better

Your Comments Are Needed - Former Reynolds Metals Property Cleanup Action Plan

Washington State Department of Ecology's final decisions on the former Reynolds Metals (currently Millennium Bulk Terminals) property on SR432/Industrial Way can be greatly influenced by your comments on the Draft Cleanup Action Plan of the former Reynolds Metals property. We need a robust cleanup. If Ecology lets polluters off the hook, our community could face future health impacts as well as economic consequences.

Landowners and Citizens for a Safe Community advocates for a thorough cleanup that will attract new, cleaner industries to Longview. A contaminated site attracts dirty commodities – like coal! A clean site is a pathway to a better economic future.

The cleanup alternative chosen by Ecology is Alternative 4.  This is one of the less thorough cleanup alternatives Ecology considered -- it removes very little hazardous material offsite and leaves the majority of contaminants onsite. However, this comment period is a time to suggest additions to Alternative 4 that strengthen the cleanup process. For example, Ecology can ensure long-term independent monitoring (not-self monitoring by the corporation) and financial assurances that are appropriate and protective so we don’t get stuck with a bill if the fund runs out early.

Here is the complete schedule for cleanup participation:

  • March 9, 2016 - Ecology's Open House from 4:30pm to 6:30pm - Presentation and Hearing with Oral Comments starting at 6:30pm - Red Lion - 510 Kelso Drive - Kelso, WA.
  • The comment period closes March 18, 2016.
