On April 9, 2016, volunteers attended our most recent river clean up at Willow Grove Park in Longview, WA. Willow Grove is a 60-acre park and boat launch on the banks of the Columbia River just west of Longview, WA. The park boasts paved walking paths, picnic tables, playgrounds, and a long sandy beach (find more info about the site at www.theswimguide.org).
Our volunteers enjoyed a lovely day at the park and scoured the shore of the Columbia for trash and debris, collecting over 36 bags of litter, two tires, two railroad ties, a soccer ball, carpet, Styrofoam blocks, 15 shoes, and four socks! We even managed to turn our trash hunting into a competitive event with prizes for the volunteers who found the most trash and the funniest items.
Thank you to all the community members who participated! And a special thank you to the Port of Longview for providing us with a dumpster for all our trash and the volunteers with Landowners and Citizens for a Safe Community (LCSC). If you know of a spot on the river that could use a cleanup or if you’d like to help coordinate an event in your area, let us know! Contact Lorri@columbiariverkeeper.org.
