Senators Question FERC on Oregon Gas Export Terminal

Sept

ember 30, 2015 (Salem, Oregon) – Senators Wyden and Merkley and Congresswoman Bonamici sent a strongly worded letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) questioning the “Oregon LNG” Liquefied Natural Gas export terminal application. FERC published the letter this morning.

The letter stated, "Without the necessary land rights . . . it will be difficult for the project to proceed."

Oregon LNG does not have the right to use the land where they wish to build the LNG terminal. A federal court ruled that the Army Corps of Engineers has a longstanding easement to deposit sand from dredging operations on the exact location proposed by Oregon LNG in Warrenton, Oregon. The Corps told FERC it will “vigorously defend” the easement.

“We appreciate that our Senators and Congresswoman are demanding answers,” stated Brett VandenHeuvel, Executive Director of Columbia Riverkeeper. “FERC’s multi-year review is a colossal waste of money. FERC needs to deny the Oregon LNG project now.”

The Senators and Congresswoman also noted that questions about the easement “have raised serious and legitimate concerns among our constituents, who have rightfully demanded answers in the aftermath of this judgment.”
