Why I'm an Adopt-A-River Volunteer

Blog post by Emily Long, Riverkeeper’s Water Quality Assistant—

May 20, 2014. My site sits along the Hood River. The rolling hills of orchard country reflect in the trundling water that sources from up high. Mount Hood looms distantly to the south and I catch a glimpse of it as I round the bend. I pick up a bottle that washed downstream and put it in my bag. This is the site I’ve adopted. The world appears to be such a large place that caring for it all seems overwhelming. But, I’ve found my own way to help. I come here to look after this stretch of the river, to feel connected to my home, and to tap into a release from life’s stresses. If everyone adopted a site, the overwhelming feeling of looking after the health of our world would diminish.

Riverkeeper's Adopt-A-River volunteer program is simple and easily accessible to many different people. Adopt a site along the Columbia River or one of its tributaries. This is a way YOU can help. This is a way YOU can make a difference.
