What is the Hanford Nuclear Reservation?

  • Located in eastern Washington on the Columbia River
  • Where the U.S. government built 9 nuclear reactors to make plutonium for our nation’s atomic bombs during WWII and the Cold War
  • Home to 177 underground tanks, several leaking, containing 56 million gallons of the most toxic pollution man has ever made
  • Pollution from Hanford threatens the Columbia River, the most productive spawning ground for Chinook Salmon on the mainstem, drinking water, water used for farm irrigation, and ultimately our river communities
