The City of Portland is slated to do something big. On November 4th, the Portland City Council will consider a strong policy to stop new fossil fuel transport infrastructure in Portland! This landmark resolution will direct city staff to develop rules that lead Portland away from new fossil fuel projects like coal, oil, and propane terminals, cementing Portland’s role as a global leader in combating climate change. Portland will consider a second resolution specifically opposing dangerous and dirty oil trains rolling through our region.

Talking Points - Tell the Portland City Council:
- The Council should vote yes on both the fossil fuel policy resolution and the oil train resolution on November 4th.
- The City of Portland is poised to be a leader on climate change by directing its staff to give real teeth to the City’s climate policies and goals.
- This fossil fuel export resolution is another positive step in the city’s effort to reduce our consumption and investment in fossil fuels. The resolution is the logical extension of existing Portland policy.
- The fossil fuel policy resolution will guide Portland towards less reliance on fossil fuels, rather than allowing new fossil fuel infrastructure to deepen the region’s dependence on oil, coal, and other fossil fuels.
- The resolution recognizes the exceptional health, safety, environmental and climate risks associated with dramatically increased shipments of coal, oil, and gas.
