Upgrade Irrigation and Remove Dams

Support real solutions that protect farms and bring us closer to Lower Snake River dam removal!

A groundbreaking draft report from the Bureau of Reclamation and the Washington Department of Ecology lays out comprehensive and inclusive options for getting farms and communities the water they need—after the Lower Snake River Dams are gone.

The draft report shows the value of farms and jobs supported by irrigation from the Lower Snake River. It also shows that, with the right investments, farms and cities can get plenty of water from a free-flowing Lower Snake River.

The agencies and decision-makers in charge of finalizing this report need your support! Dear Washington Dept. of Ecology and US Bureau of Reclamation:

Thank you for your hard work over the last year to create the draft Lower Snake River Water Supply Replacement Study! This draft study shows that—with the right investments—farms and salmon can coexist after the Lower Snake River dams are gone.

I appreciate that the draft study:

  • emphasizes the critical and urgent need to address Tribal treaty rights and the catastrophic risks of salmon extinction.
  • confirms that, even during low-water years, a free-flowing Lower Snake River would provide plenty of water for farms, cities, and industry.
  • thoroughly describes existing water uses along the Lower Snake River—based on many interviews with farmers and others—and proposes a range of practical solutions.
  • proves that protecting salmon and supporting farmers and food production are not mutually exclusive.

I hope that the final version of the Lower Snake River Water Supply Replacement Study carries forward these important messages.

Before releasing the final study, the Bureau of Reclamation and Washington Department of Ecology should work with farmers and others to identify which of the many potential solutions identified in the draft study would work best for water and river users.

Thank you,

Snake River Dams = Waste of Water

New study shows Lower Snake River dams waste vast amounts of water through evaporation.
